UNITED STATES CITIZENSHIP
- BY THE AMERICAN LEGAL REVIEW, THE PREMIER ONLINE RESOURCE FOR LEGAL INFORMATION AND THE EVALUATION OF LEGAL PRODUCTS AND SERVICES
In the United States, people can become citizens by birth or via a process called naturalization. U.S. citizenship can be obtained in one of four ways:
- birth in the United States or its territories
- birth to US citizen parents
- Naturalization of one's parents
- Naturalization
Before entering the USA, foreigners must obtain a visa, an authorizing document issued by the U.S Government, which specifies the purpose of the visit and the time period during which you are allowed to enter (or re-enter) the US.
The two main types of visa are immigrant visas and non-immigrant visas. Foreigners who intend to remain in the United States permanently should get an immigrant visa. It is difficult to obtain immigrant status if you have a non-immigrant visa.
Short visits to the US do not always require a visa. For example, citizens of certain countries can visit for business or tourism for 90 days without a visa.
